Students Write - Prof. Martin's Class: Roxana

My Personal Mission Here in Harris County
by Roxana Solis

My Name is Roxana Solis and I graduated from Spring High School last year as the class secretary. Being in Student Council and class secretary really helped me reach out to my community and try to make a difference. We would plan on how we can reach out to the community, we volunteered at food banks and went to nursing homes.
My Name is Roxana Solis and I graduated from Spring High School last year as the class secretary. Being in Student Council and class secretary really helped me reach out to my community and try to make a difference. We would plan on how we can reach out to the community, we volunteered at food banks and went to nursing homes.

Doing all this in high school really helped me realize that I wanted to do something where I would be making a change in someone’s life. That’s when I saw kids as helpless humans who can’t defend themselves properly. It’s not up to them what happens to them it’s the parent’s responsibility and unfortunately some environments for children aren’t in good stable homes.

That’s where I decided I want to become a social worker. I’m also now in the process of getting my Child Development Associate (CDA) as I’m working as a pre-school teacher. My CDA would allow me to help my mom with her daycare so it can become larger. The children are the future in our community of Harris and I think it’s very important for children to get a good education at a young age and not just sit in front of the TV and learn nothing.

That’s why I am in some clubs and organizations like Texas Rising Stars and Collaborative for Children that have providers all around Texas. They specialize in giving the best education and making sure they develop the most they can in every way and I am trying to make that change starting here in my community of Harris County. The community is opening and growing for social workers, there are always children in need of care and good education.

My plan is to get my associates of science here at Lone Star College and graduate in 2019. Then I plan on transferring to the University of Houston where I want to get bachelor’s degree in social work. With the organizations I am in hope to be able to find a job as a social worker soon.

My Mission in College
by Lesly Suarez

To become a doctor in this time period is difficult, and especially for Hispanic women. For some reason, being Hispanic means I have to work extra for people to trust me, respect me, or honor me.

T
he doctor I want to become is an obstetrician and gynecologist (OB-GYN), which is a doctor for pregnant women. These types of doctors most likely have their own little office away from the hospital, but still work in a hospital when it is time for the women to give birth.

To be an OB-GYN, I will attend more college and four years of being in a residency program. Currently I am in Lone Star College for two years for my associate’s degree, but transferring to
Texas State University to finish my last two years of basics. Then, I'm planning to go to Stanford University
 for medical school.

I chose this career because it something that I have in a way passion for mostly for the part of being able to see a human being grow and come into this world. By doing this, I can be financially stable and live a better life for my future kids, family, and me. I hope to give them more opportunities than what my parents gave me.

Also by choosing this career, I can help people from my community. I can help them by having some dates of the month for a free clinic visit where community members can get a monthly check up for free, with my help. Also I can at teach schools and show students more about health, or become a pregnancy counselor at schools.
